Britain's top artificial intelligence institute has revealed a new mission to help defend the nation from online assaults targeting essential systems including power, transport and utilities.

This strategic shift follows major restructuring at the publicly-funded organization, including the departure of its ex-leader last month after both workforce dissatisfaction and official demands for major restructuring.
Increasing Digital Threats
The new mission comes amid increasing worry about the UK's exposure to internet outages and online threats.
Recent incidents have highlighted these weaknesses, including a widespread failure affecting worldwide digital services and recent cyber-attacks that halted manufacturing at significant plants and distribution networks across several organizations.
Management and Supervision
A previous senior officer of the UK's air and space warfare centre will provide findings next month on how the government-funded institute can best support the extent of national AI objectives in defense, homeland protection and information gathering.
Organizational Refocusing
The organization's leader, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that nearly eighty separate studies at the organization with 440 employees have been terminated, spun out or completed because they aren't consistent with the new direction.

The center has faced organizational challenges since last year as staff protested against restructuring, culminating in a group of employees submitting a formal grievance to the appropriate oversight organization.
The center's administration stated that these employee allegations were externally examined by a independent entity that found them to have lack merit.
