Chainsaw Man Tops Domestic Cinema Earnings in First Weekend
Did Sony done it again? Coming after the success of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed in excess of $600 million at the box office, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100M mark worldwide, attaining a global total of over $108 million during its debut. The film outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9M).
Strong U.S. and Global Results
Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a straightforward follow-up of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It earned $18.2 million domestically after a strong $5.2 million Saturday box office and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday performance. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced feature earned nearly $15 million across 46 Sony markets, resulting in a global sum of over $60 million under Sony ($43.1M abroad, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Sony has yet to announce its final earnings figure.
Benchmarks to Other Successful Anime Films
Specialist agency a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, comparing the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34 million in the domestic market in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical $18 million stateside. Reze Arc’s opening frame is in line with that standard, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar international sum is now positioned a bit short of the earlier film's over $166 million overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible this Chainsaw Man film will achieve the box office of blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a major victory for the distributor.
Marketing Campaigns Drive Success
Along with its affiliate the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used fan engagement to boost their leadership at the anime box office. The Reze Arc marketing campaign kicked off at the Anime Expo in LA in the month of July with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, then continued with a significant involvement at NYCC showcasing exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an special preview for fans for moviegoers and popular figures too after the concluding day of the gathering.
Future Prospects
2025 stands as a significant period for animated films, and for Sony, which has an additional anime film debuting this year in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
