The child of previous South African Leader Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related charges at the start of her trial in the coastal city of Durban city.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over comments she made on social media in the past during violent unrest in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.

A period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including theft and arson, left at least 300 individuals killed and led to damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (2.2 billion pounds).

Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of fuelling this violence and confronts accusations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

Context of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KZN and followed the former president's detention for defying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an probe into allegations of graft while he was holding office.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently rejected the charges against her, with her lawyer in the past calling the state's evidence as weak.

She has also frequently said the allegations against her were an bid to settle political scores with her father after he founded his own party and competed against the ANC.

Backing and Case Arguments

This was reinforced by the foundation, which stated the case was an "power abuse" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the former president and his kin.

A handful of followers from her political organization, the political party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other party leaders were present at the hearings inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the testimony presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and lacks concrete proof for a guilty verdict.

Main Aspects of the Trial

  • Digital comments from 2019 form the foundation of the state's case
  • Fatal demonstrations in July 2021 resulted in major casualties and monetary losses
  • The accused confronts multiple allegations of provocation to unrest
  • Legal proceedings are projected to continue for multiple court sessions

The legal proceedings continues as all parties present their cases before the court in what is projected to be a carefully observed court case with substantial politically charged implications for South Africa.
