Munich International Airport Halts Operations Following UAV Sightings Lead to Recent Europe-Wide Aviation Disruption
Multiple drone sightings above Munich airport on Thursday evening compelled aviation authorities to suspend operations, causing the termination of 17 flights and disrupting travel for nearly 3,000 passengers in the German city.
Another 15 inbound flights were rerouted to Frankfurt, Vienna, Nuremberg and Stuttgart, the airport said in a statement, marking the most recent drone disruption to Europe's air travel after similar sightings briefly closed airports in Norway and Denmark last week.
German aviation regulators restricted flight operations at Munich airport from late Thursday evening and later halted them completely due to multiple drone sightings, the airport confirmed.
City Previously On Edge After Recent Safety Events
The urban center was already tense this week after its popular Oktoberfest was briefly shut down due to a bomb threat and the finding of dangerous materials in a apartment complex in the north of the metropolis.
European Officials Address Growing UAV Challenge
Denmark has stopped short of saying which party it believes is responsible for the occurrences in its skies recently, which disrupted flight operations at multiple airfields, but Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen has suggested it could be Russia.
Frederiksen stated Europe was in its "gravest and riskiest position" since the conclusion of the World War II, as she hosted EU officials for discussions on aiding Ukraine and firming up European security initiatives intended to ensure the region is ready to prevent aggressors by 2030.
During the summit, leaders supported proposals to bolster the union's protections against Russian drones.
Military Response Strengthens
On Sunday a Germany's naval vessel, FSG Hamburg, arrived in Copenhagen to contribute to "strengthening Denmark's airspace surveillance" during the meetings, Danish armed forces announced.
The warship is a component of Nato's "Baltic Watch" operation, which the organization stated this weekend it planned to strengthen. A Nato representative commented there would be "heightened alertness" in the Baltic Sea region, including Denmark.
Moscow Rejections and International Strains
Russian President Vladimir Putin remarked humorously recently that he wouldn't operate UAVs over Denmark anymore, but Moscow has rejected blame for the events.
