In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing Vladimir Putin in a new film. The movie, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This figure is a political superhero devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series released last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from chaos. Although the character's name Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this identical story rather than undercutting it. An adaptation based on a popular book aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged him to take the job. The position was in essence a casting call with no shortage of contenders. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the state de facto.

• His list included several politicians, including a reformer later murdered and a security service director.
• Per an expert who studied his rise, the chosen candidate simply fitted the required parameters: loyal, from the security services, and politically neutral.
• A businessman familiar with the process stated the primary requirement was manageability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a low-level clerk not involved with field operations.

Curiously, the move to depicting him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. His harder version prompted local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on Moscow streets, fueling the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's omission of public dissent, the political rivals, or key figures in the story, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. He is hinted at through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the very myths it might seek to examine.
