Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, responding to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made remarks after the Broncos' historic 33-32 victory over the New York. Payton remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious split between the player and his coach.
