Severe Downpours Aggravate Situation for Evacuated Gazans, UN Caution

Almost 55,000 homes have so far been harmed by the rains, with their items and shelters destroyed.

Intense rains over the past week have compounded the precarious situation of the many hundreds of thousands of uprooted Palestinians in the territory, as stated by aid organizations.

"Horrendous" Night Brings Grave Risks

A representative characterized the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with downpours so intense that as much as 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the streets.

"The recent weather was really difficult for the families. The storms were so intense... And the gusts were so strong," noted the official.

There is grave concern that children living in tents in wet attire will contract hypothermia and additional ailments.

Deaths and Significant Damage

The health ministry have stated that one baby has died from exposure and a minimum of 11 other people have died in structural failures triggered by the severe weather.

Further statements suggest a higher number of casualties. Authorities reported that numerous residential buildings had fully given way and many others had collapsed partially.

Assistance Operations Deemed Insufficient

Agencies have increased shipments of shelter, blankets and clothing after the truce started, but they have said there is continues to be not enough aid entering.

"Officials are operating tirelessly to provide that relief and to distribute it, but the magnitude of the necessities is so enormous that we are faced with a great number of people and children who are really suffering each evening," warned one representative.

Ongoing Issues and Agreement Provisions

Relief bodies have highlighted the necessity for "increased and sustained aid to meet immediate and ongoing requirements."
