The Israeli Premier League derby between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv was called off before the start on the weekend, following what police labeled as "civil unrest and major clashes".

"Many of smoke devices and fireworks were launched," authorities announced on digital channels, noting "this cannot be considered a sporting event, it represents unrest and significant aggression".

Twelve civilians and multiple officers were harmed, police said, while multiple persons were arrested and numerous others questioned by police.

The clashes happen just a short time after authorities in the Britain stated that Maccabi Tel Aviv fans cannot be permitted to be present at the international tournament game at the English club in England the following month because of safety concerns.

One team censured the game abandonment, accusing authorities of "getting ready for a conflict, not a football match", including during talks in the build-up to the highly-anticipated match.

"The disturbing events near the arena and following the ill-considered and unacceptable decision to cancel the game only show that the law enforcement has assumed command over the football," Hapoel Tel Aviv announced publicly.

The other team has declined to speak, merely stating the game was called off.

The decision by Birmingham's Safety Advisory Group to prohibit the team's supporters from the Aston Villa match on November 6 has provoked broad condemnation.

The UK government has later announced it is working to overturn the restriction and considering what additional resources might be required to guarantee the match can be conducted securely.

Aston Villa notified their matchday stewards that they did not have to work at the fixture, saying they recognized that some "may have concerns".

On the previous day, law enforcement stated it endorsed the prohibition and classified the match as "potentially dangerous" due to intelligence and previous incidents.

That involved "serious fights and bigotry-related acts" among Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv fans before a fixture in Amsterdam in late 2024, when numerous persons were taken into custody.

There have been demonstrations at various games over the situation in Gaza, including when the national team competed against Norway and Italy in latest international matches.
