For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Vecna. The search for a way out in episode 6 leads them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event went deeper than a defensive killing.

Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the encounter is detailed in the stage play the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is known about Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
