The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
