The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
