The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
