UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
