What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
